Transcendentalism Workshop

The literary and philosophical movement known as Transcendentalism grew out of 19th century New England Unitarianism. Its leading lights included Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller and Louisa May Alcott. This movement that emerged from Unitarianism also radically reshaped Unitarianism itself in the decades that followed. Its impact endures to this day in our views of the divine, through our ability to see the sacred in the natural world, and our in commitment to social justice.

This four-part series led by Rev. Shawn Gauthier will offer an introduction to the context and key ideas of this movement and invite participants to reflect on what the Transcendentalist have to say to us today. There will be an expectation of reading a couple of chapter-length texts for each session to deepen our discussions.
