World Premiere by Kari Turunen and the Vancouver Chamber Choir Guest Narrator: Madeleine Shaw
Ode to Lotta is a choral cantata with narration that explores the remarkable life story of beloved humanitarian, Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova, CC (1909-1990), founder of the Unitarian Service Committee, USC Canada.
The cantata includes choral settings of poems by William Shakespeare, Victor Hugo (a trilogy) and Emily Dickinson; choral arrangements of an Erik Satie piano piece and a Gustav Mahler art song; three new choral creations that evoke different aspects of Lotta’s life (including a reference to 49th and Oak!); plus “A Hymn to Biodiversity,” which celebrates the important agricultural program Seeds of Survival that Lotta’s organization (now named SeedChange) developed after her passing.
Eight of the songs will be world premieres.
